Store clerk accused of selling beer to students appears in court

The store clerk accused of selling beer to teens at a west Nashville store appeared in court Tuesday.

Police padlocked the Stop and Shop Tobacco and Beer store on White Bridge Road on Monday after the store's owner Amen Naguib sold beer to undercover underage decoys.

Investigators have since learned the store had a system where teenagers asked for the "$40 deal" and were given a case of beer in exchange.

During Tuesday's court appearance Naguib agreed to forfeit all of the beer seized during Monday's raid, forfeit nearly $200 found at the store and pay the required fees for destroying seized beer.

The Stop and Shop Tobacco and Beer store is unable to sell beer for 90 days.

The agreement also makes the store a public nuisance which will allow them to be shut down again if they are in violation of any other law in the future.

Metro police said the penalties against the store should send a message to other markets about the police department's proactive work to stop underage alcohol sales.

"Even though it was these markets affected today [in court] it goes without saying that every other market will be looked at," Captain Mike Alexander said.

Naguib still faces three misdemeanor charges of selling beer to minors in connection with the November undercover beer buy.

He is set to go on trial for those charges in March.
