Tyler Wisdom, 19, was accidentally shot early Sunday morning in Columbia.
COLUMBIA, Tenn. -
A 19-year-old Maury County man was shot and killed after his friend's pistol accidentally fired.
James "Tyler" Wisdom was attending a party at a townhome in the 2000 block of Union Place Court in Columbia early Sunday morning when the incident occurred.
According to investigators, a man who lived in the home was showing someone his gun in an upstairs room when it accidentally discharged. The bullet went through the floor and struck Wisdom, who was standing directly below him downstairs.
Wisdom suffered a single gunshot to the head.
"He was standing in the wrong spot," said Lt. Joey Gideon.
Several people witnessed the shooting.
"They heard the sound of what they later identified as a shot being fired. I don't know that they knew it was a shot fired right then," said Lt. Gideon.
Police responded to the 911 call. The victim was unresponsive when they arrived. He was pronounced dead by medical personnel.
The owner of the gun has not been charged.
Investigators say the shooting appears to be a "tragic accident."
Wisdom was a Columbia native. Funeral arrangements are pending.
