SMYRNA, Tenn. -

A man was found shot to death inside a car alongside Interstate 24 near Smyrna on Sunday, and authorities are investigating his death as a homicide.

The off-ramp at the Almaville Road exit was blocked for nearly seven hours after a passerby stopped to check on the man, who was slumped in the driver's seat, around 6:30 a.m.

Authorities arrived to the scene to find 47-year-old Jackie Warpoole Jr. of Smyrna dead of a gunshot wound inside his silver Dodge Magnum.

Warpoole's family told News 2 he was a husband, father and soon-to-be grandfather.

According to his Facebook page, he was well known within the motocross community.

The incident is still being investigated by the Rutherford County Sheriff's Department, the Tennessee Highway Patrol and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

Authorities are trying to locate the last people who may have spoken to Warpoole on Sunday.

Neither a suspect nor motive is known.

Anyone with information or who may have seen anything unusual in the area is urged to call Detective Jamin Humphress at 615-904-3054 and leave a message.
