HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -

A freshman at Independence High School in Williamson County is hospitalized in Huntsville, Alabama after injuring his spinal cord during a wrestling match last weekend.

Hunter Garstin, 15, was injured Saturday when he was pinned to the mat by another wrestler. The injury was accidental.

He was rushed to an area hospital where he underwent surgery.

Doctors at first were not optimistic and told Garstin's parents that he would probably not walk again.

They've since learned Garstin's spinal cord was twisted not severed.

Garstin is improving everyday and recently regained feeling in one of his toes. He also recognizes pressure on his lower legs and is able to raise his arms.

The outpouring of support for Garstin and his family has been tremendous.

A Facebook page set up for the teen, Prayers for Hunter Garstin, has more than 8,000 likes and growing. The family hopes to reach 15,000 likes.

On Wednesday, Garstin was moved from ICU to a private room and he is now waiting on acceptance at Shepherd's Center Rehabilitation in Atlanta.

Friends can follow Garstin's progress on his Facebook page or the hashtag #hunterstrong.
