Forecasted winter weather won't affect high school championship games

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -

Winter weather will not affect this week's Blue Cross Blue Shield high school football championship games in Cookeville.

TSSAA assistant director Matthew Gillespie told News 2 that the games, beginning Thursday, will go on despite a forecasted wintry mix.

"The games will go on as scheduled," Gillespie said. "The only time that we would have to move games is when you get into playing games and you get into something like lightning, or if severe weather, if a tornado came through. We would deal with that at the time."

Gillespie said if it snowed it would not be the first time teams have played in the winter weather.  In 2000 Riverdale High played Red Bank in a title game in Murfreesboro where blowing snow covered the field.

He compared TSSAA weather policy to policy's on collegiate and NFL levels.

"We approach it like college and pro do, you usually don't see them moving events unless it's something major like a hurricane come through," he said, adding, "Football can be played in snow; it can be played in rain. We might see one or the other or both,"

The only time the TSSAA steps in to delay games is in the event of severe weather such as tornados and lightning.

Games are scheduled for Thursday through Saturday night.

Four teams are among the 16 that have made it to the title game.
•    Ensworth vs. Memphis University School
•    Christ Presbyterian Academy vs. Alcoa
•    Henry County vs. Knoxville West
•    Trousdale County vs. Adamsville
•    Hendersonville vs. Maryville

Winter-like weather including sleet and rain is in the forecast beginning Thursday and continuing through the weekend.
