Incarcerated women to earn Lipscomb degrees

Posted: Updated:
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Eight women from the Tennessee Prison for Women and one other inmate from a separate facility are about to graduate with degrees from Lipscomb University.

The Associated Press reported the incarcerated women took college-level courses over the past eight years to earn their degrees.

Their education was made possible by the Lipscomb Initiative for Education program.  The schools sends faculty members to the prison every Wednesday evening to teach courses in subjects like art history, judicial process, Christian ethics, community engagement, math, English and physics.

Around 15 students from Lipscomb's campus also visit the prison each week to take courses alongside the prisoners.

The graduation ceremony is being put together by Lipscomb and held inside the prison's gymnasium on December 13.
