WOODBINE, Ky. -

More than 30 cats and dogs died in a fire at a Kentucky animal shelter on Friday.

The cause of the fire at the Knox-Whitley animal shelter, located about 85 miles north of Knoxville, was not immediately known.

A fire official reported part of the building’s roof caved in, making firefighters unable to reach some of the animals.

However, some were able to be rescued and volunteers spent Sunday searching for those that escaped.

As of the end of the day Sunday, all the animals that survived the fire were adopted.

Volunteers are currently searching for another building to house the shelter.

A fire official says about a dozen cats and dogs have died in a fire at a Whitley County animal shelter.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
