The Maury County Sheriff's Department is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred at a Culleoka home Thanksgiving evening.
Investigators stated James "Lewis" Cothran and his wife were arguing at their home in the 4000 block of Moore Lane around 9 p.m. Thursday when she allegedly threatened Cothran with a kitchen knife.
Cothran told police it began when his wife asked him to take off the shoes he was wearing. He reportedly refused because the shoes belonged to his father, who passed away 30 years ago, causing a fight to ensue.
His wife allegedly walked toward him with a kitchen knife and stated that she should "just knock his eyeballs out and leave him there," according to the police report.
Cothran stated they argued for about 30 minutes and his wife had a "crazy look in her eyes," so he picked up a revolver that was on the floor beside his chair and shot his wife in the face.
Authorities stated Cothran then called 911 to report the shooting.
The Maury County Sheriff's Department confirmed they have responded to the home due to domestic issues several times before. No one was arrested or hurt in those incidents.
Cothran is reportedly claiming self-defense. Charges were not immediately filed. The case is expected to go before the district attorney for review.
