Winter storm system threatens holiday travel, delays flights

Posted: Updated:

A wall of storms containing ice, sleet and rain is threatening holiday travel for millions of Americans set to drive, fly or ride a train Wednesday for Thanksgiving.

At the Nashville International Airport, the lines at ticket counters and for security weren't long early Wednesday morning but by noon travelers were beginning to experience longer wait times.

News 2 found several passengers who had to spend the night in the airport after their flights were cancelled because of the storms on Tuesday.

A few were also cancelled and delayed Wednesday morning.   As of 7:30 a.m., two flights were cancelled.

One flight on Delta arriving from La Guardia in New York was cancelled, and another with United Airlines heading to Newark, New Jersey was cancelled.

Eight arriving flights were also delayed, and nine departing flights were delayed.

The storm system originated out West and is the cause of 11 deaths so far, half of which occurred in Texas.

Forecasters are expecting the weather to worsen throughout the day Wednesday.

Heavy rain and windy conditions are set to strike the East Coast from the Carolinas to the Northeast, causing potentially bad news for the anticipated busiest travel day of the year.

More than 43 million people are expected to travel over the long holiday weekend, according to AAA. The overwhelming majority, nearly 39 million, will be on the roads.

Another three million people are expected to filter through airports, so air travelers are advised to check with their airlines well before their flights.
