NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A 50-year-old man is dead after he was stabbed with a homemade spear at a homeless camp in Madison, north of Nashville, Wednesday night.

Klayton Eammelli told police he stabbed Martin McDonald after McDonald tried to steal a piece of his plywood from his camp.

Eammelli, 58, called 911 to report the matter at 11:45 p.m.

McDonald was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he died early Thursday morning.

Eammelli was detained by police and later released.

Detectives are investigating his claim of self-defense and charges weren't immediately filed.

Eammelli has lived at the homeless camp located in the 1200 block of Gallatin Pike South behind the Robinson Flea Market in Madison for six months.  He told News 2 he is familiar with those who stay there but had never seen McDonald before Wednesday night.

He did not go on camera, but appeared visibly upset following his release from police custody.  He told News 2, "I'm not a murderer.  I was involved in an altercation that led to a death."

The investigation is ongoing.
