Breast cancer victim encourages others after delaying mammogram

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A Middle Tennessee is preparing for the fight of her life after she was recently diagnosed with breast cancer after putting off a routine mammogram.

Janise Stewart works in healthcare and has a family history of the devastating disease, but when it came time for her to undergo a mammogram at the beginning of the year she stalled.

"They gave me the paper to have my chest X-ray and mammogram done over in X-ray and life being busy as it is, I just stuck the paper in my purse and said, ‘Okay, I'll have that done,'" Stewart recalled.

Stewart told Nashville's News 2 it was the urging of a nurse and family members that convinced her to undergo the routine testing for breast cancer.

"This time I think I just kind of shunned it because they all turned out to be normal, but little did I know," she said.

Following her surprising diagnosis, Stewart said she is now encouraging all women to not put off mammogram testing.

"I just encourage everyone if you are in that age group, well really not even if you are in that age group, get that mammogram done and any other testing for cancer," she said.

Stewart is currently preparing for a mastectomy.

The American Cancer Society recommends women undergo annual checks beginning at the age of 40.
