MAURY COUNTY, Tenn. -

Officials in Maury County are set to discuss a ban on landfills near the Duck River this week.

The proposal came after two companies wanted to build an 850-acre landfill close to the river.

The companies, out of Denver, Colorado, aimed to build the landfill on 5,200 acres of land they own near the Duck River on Monsanto Road, just northwest of Columbia.

They decided to withdraw their proposal after it sparked public outrage.

Opponents believe it would pollute the river and drive down property values.  They created a Web site to voice their concerns.

The attorney representing the two companies made a motion to withdraw the proposal before a vote to deny it was carried out by the board.

Commissioners will discuss the resolution on Tuesday.
