Woman creates company to fill niche for clear handbags

After Laura Rottmann was laid off during the economic downturn in 2008, she had extra time on her hands to search for entrepreneurial opportunities.

Rottmann said she used to work for a facility that required their employees to bring clear handbags only, for security reasons.

She said she had a hard time finding them in stores, and decided to start manufacturing her own.

Rottmann's business took a fortuitous turn when the NFL heightened security and announced a new policy, banning standard handbags and mandating that only clear bags be brought into stadiums.

Specifically, the NFL requirements are bags have to be completely clear and have the dimensions 12" x 6" x 12".

Rottmann said her business only had a few bags that actually met those criteria when the policy was announced, so she moved quickly to create new merchandise before pre-season games began.

She was able to meet the demand just in time and the bags have sold well.

Rottmann told News 2 her sales tripled in August and September from July, before the NFL bag policy went into effect.
