Convicted felon arrested after standoff near Fisk University

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Metro police arrested a suspect Wednesday afternoon after a standoff at a home near Fisk University in north Nashville.

The suspect identified as Kenneth Blackwell was barricaded at an apartment in the located in the 900 block of Blank Street off Henry Street and Dr. DB Todd Jr. Boulevard for more than an hour.

Police reported the convicted felon allegedly held his girlfriend against her will earlier in the day before physically attacking her.

The victim was able to escape the apartment and contacted police around 12:15 p.m.

The suspect was arrested just before 2:30 p.m. Police recovered a handgun from the apartment.

Blackwell is charged with aggravated kidnapping and aggravated assault charges.

Police reported the victim and Blackwell had no prior incidents between them.

Blackwell has previous convictions for unlawful weapon possession, assault and cocaine possession.
