NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A former Metro police sergeant turned himself in Wednesday amid allegations he stole thousands from a local youth organization.

A grand jury indicted John Patton, 59, on one felony theft count for misappropriating approximately $20,000 from the UNA Recreation Center.

Patton volunteered in a leadership position at the recreation center for many years, according to police.

A 36-year veteran of the Nashville Police Department, Patton retired in May in the midst of both criminal and administrative investigations into the UNA matter.

He was booked into the Metro jail Wednesday on $20,000 bond.

The UNA Recreation Center provides football and cheerleading opportunities to youth in southeastern Davidson County.
