Nashville Rescue Mission in need of turkeys to feed homeless

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

The Nashville Rescue Mission is in need of 1,000 turkeys in time to serve Thanksgiving dinners to those in need.

The mission put the call out Monday after seeing there were only 25 turkeys in their freezer.

"Over Thanksgiving we'll do over 5,000 meals just over those two days, so it's a special time we want it to be a special day for those who are less fortunate," said Lynn Bogle, development director for the mission.

"One thousand is the goal, but if we go beyond that we can certainly use them to feed those that are hurting at other times of the year," Bogle said.

Cold weather and the holidays generally bring an increase in the number of men, women and children the Mission care for.

Last Christmas, Bogle said the Mission "set a record" with 52 children staying at the organization.

"[It's] not a record we're proud of," he said.

Over the course of the two-day Thanksgiving Banquet, women and children will be bused to the south Nashville location on LaFayette Avenue where men stay.

Bogle told News 2 since the call for turkeys went out earlier this week, they have been constantly taking donations.

"Nashville is always resilient in how they help when there's a need, so we're being blessed with turkeys that are being given every day," he said.

In addition to the turkeys, the non-profit organization needs all the side items most families will have on their dinner table.

Turkey and canned food donations can be dropped off at the Mission's donation center located at 616 7th Avenue Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The Nashville Rescue Mission began serving the homeless and hungry in Middle Tennessee in 1954.

A grocery "Wish List" has been posted on their Web site.
