NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A man was arrested late Sunday night after police observed him pouring gasoline and lighting a downtown area on fire.

Mark Mitchell, 40, was observed by an officer pouring liquid from a red gasoline container around a tree in the 500 block of James Robertson Parkway in Nashville.

The officer reported Mitchell then lit the area, containing wood mulch, the tree and the gasoline container, on fire.

Once in custody, he allegedly admitted to pouring the gasoline and lighting it in order to "see" if the liquid was, in fact, gasoline.

According to police, Mitchell also stated he copes with the loss of a loved one by setting things on fire.

The area set on fire was also touching a parking garage connected to condominiums that house 350 residents in 240 units, therefore endangering all the residents inside.

Mitchell was arrested just after 11 p.m. Sunday and booked on $80,000 bond.

His arrest history shows multiple charges for public intoxication, possession of drugs and paraphernalia and assault.
