Purse snatching victim fights back

Posted: Updated:

An elderly woman was robbed outside of a local Kroger grocery store Saturday afternoon.

The robbery occurred at the business located at 61 Thompson Lane around 4 p.m.

81-year-old Leah Currey had just finished shopping and gotten in her car when a man approached her and told her there was a package behind her vehicle.

When she opened her door, the man lunged toward her, reaching for her purse.

"As soon as he did that, I started kicking him as hard as I could and hollering 'help,' but there was no one in sight," Currey said.

During that scuffle she noticed the suspect had what appeared to be a small gun in his hand. But that didn't stop her from fighting.

"I think he said at one point that he would shoot me. But I kept kicking."

Eventually the suspect grabbed her purse and took off running. Currey's purse contained some cash, but no credit cards or driver's license.

Currey's husband, a former Metro police officer, told News 2 the suspect probably didn't know he would wind up with "a tiger by the tail."

The victim said she's glad she didn't give up without a fight. But she also knew the risk.

"I'm glad I did it. And I'm glad he didn't shoot me. I wasn't hurt. But I hope he was."

She described the suspect as a white man, under 5 feet, 10 inches, and in his 20s.

Metro Police are still investigating the incident.
