Cars damaged by steel piece on Silliman Evans Bridge

At least five vehicles sustained damage Monday morning after a steel bridge joint popped up on the Silliman Evans Bridge.

Reports of car and tire damage began coming in around 7:30 a.m.

Tennessee Department of Transportation spokesperson Deanna Lambert said the Silliman Evans Bridge is one of the busiest in the state with 140,000 vehicles traveling on it each day.

Lambert said Monday's incident stemmed from a situation of fatigue. Weather also played a factor.

TDOT crews have since responded to the scene and have sawed off the steel piece that was sticking up and causing damage to some motorists' vehicles.

"It is perfectly fine to drive on it like this, without the steel piece in it, it just protects the bridge joint," Lambert said.

Officials said the bridge, which was built in 1963, is expected to undergo a renovation in the spring.

Anyone who sustained damage to their car Monday morning must file a claim with the Tennessee Division of Claims Administration.
