Officials investigate death at Wrigley plant

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - Occupational safety officials are investigating Chattanooga's Wrigley Manufacturing plant after a 34-year-old woman died there.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports Mandie Rachael Creel Chitwood died Monday, hours after she was seriously injured in an accident at the Wrigley plant on Sunday.

Details of the accident have not been released by Tennessee's Occupational Safety and Health Administration or Wrigley.

Jeff Hentschel, communications director for Tennessee's Department of Labor and Workforce Development, said the TOSHA investigation could last six months.

The plant was cited for two safety violations in 2005, with one of those considered serious.

The serious violation was for failing to provide adequate first aid training.

Caroline Sherman, the candy maker's U.S. manager of marketing communications, said the company focuses on safety as a first priority.
