Red Sox dominate Cardinals in World Series opener

BOSTON, Mass. -

Jon Lester tossed 7 2/3 shutout innings and the Boston Red Sox routed the St. Louis Cardinals 8-1 in game one of the World Series Wednesday in Boston.

Lester struck out eight Cardinals and gave up only five hits for the victory.

St. Louis did not play its best game of the post season, the Cardinals committed three errors in the ball game as the Red Sox jumped out to a 5-0 lead after only two innings.

David Ortiz put it away late with a two-run homer in the seventh inning. Ortiz and Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli each finished with three runs batted in.

The Red Sox lead the series 1-0 with game two Thursday night.
