Blackman High School teacher reinstated following assault charge

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -

A physical education teacher accused of assaulting a student has been reinstated following a 15-day suspension.

Ronnie Bray, a teacher at Blackman High School, was arrested October 9 after he allegedly assaulted a student, threw her down on the ground, straddled and punched her.

The student's mother obtained an arrest warrant and Bray was charged with simple assault.

In documents obtained by Nashville's News 2 Investigates, Bray told school officials the incident was "horse play" and he "had no intentions of hurting" the student.

Director of Schools, Don Odom, suspended Bray for 15 days during an investigation of the allegations, citing the charge against him saying it was "inappropriate conduct" and "unbecoming of a member of the teaching profession."

As part of his punishment, Bray must also attend and complete an employee assistance program.

Officials from Rutherford County schools would not speak on camera about the incident, but released a statement that read in part, "The school district does not take the situation lightly which is why the teacher has been discipline."

Odom said Wednesday that the student involved in the incident has changed schools. She will no longer have contact with Bray.

Nashville's News 2 Investigates has reached out to Bray multiple times for comment regarding the incident without success.

He is due in court November 12.
