NEWPORT (WATE)- Cocke Co. Fire Department is investigating a series of suspicious fires that popped up along Interstate 40 Sunday afternoon.
Cocke County Fire Chief William Smallwood said crews had to extinguish eight to ten small fires along the interstate.
The fires were sparked on an eight mile stretch from mile marker 432 to 440 near Newport.
Chief William said it took about two hours to stifle the flames.
Traffic was not blocked, but it did slow down.
He said no one was injured, and there was no major damage done.
Investigators are still determining the cause of the fire and searching for a possible suspect.
