Car damaged after deer leaps into road

A mother and daughter traveling through Springfield Wednesday night narrowly escaped a run-in with a large buck.

The vehicle-deer collision happened along Memorial Boulevard between Stonewall Drive and Academy Drive around 8:30 p.m.

Nashville's News 2 obtained pictures of the scene from Smokey Barn News, which show extensive damage to the front end of the family's sedan. The impact was strong enough to force the airbags to deploy.

The mother and daughter from Greenbrier were not hurt in the crash.

The stretch of roadway is illuminated with street lights, but flanked by woods.

The driver told the local media outlet, "[The deer] was just right there in front of me. There was no way I could stop."

The collision is not uncommon.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, 5,911 deer-related crashes were reported in 2012. Of those, 5,601 involved property damage.  More than 300 people were hurt and three individuals died in those crashes.

Earlier this month, THP warned motorists to watch out for deer.

"The chances of striking deer are considerably higher during hunting and mating season, especially in November," THP Colonel Tracy Trott said in a statement.

The increased risks extend from October through December, when deer are more active and potentially more aggressive, but there are ways to avoid deer-related crashes.

THP advises motorists to be attentive, especially on isolated roads at dusk and dawn where deer are seen in larger numbers.  Also, slow down immediately if you see a deer to anticipate the animal's sudden movements.  And if a deer runs into your path, don't swerve.  You could lose control of your vehicle or confuse the deer on which way to go, causing greater harm to yourself or others.

THP asks for motorists to report any deer collisions, even if the damage is minor, by calling your local THP headquarters or *THP (*847) from a mobile phone.
