BRISTOL, Tenn. -
After years of planning, NASCAR and college football are officially joining forces.
The University of Tennessee and Virginia Tech will play each other at Bristol Motor Speedway on September 10, 2016.
Officials from both schools and the speedway made the formal announcement Monday with the help of both head football coaches.
"It's a chance and opportunity to be part of something extremely special that will live with you for a lifetime," said Tennessee coach Butch Jones.
The game, now being billed the "Battle at Bristol," will take place in the infield of the of the 52-year old track and could be played in front of an excess of 150,000 fans.
Officials from all parties hope the event will set a college football attendance record. The current of 115,109 was set in September at Michigan Stadium for the Michigan-Notre Dame match up.
