CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -

South Korea-based Hankook Tire Company announced plans Monday morning to build its first tire U.S. tire plant in Clarksville.

The $800 million investment is expected to bring 1,800 jobs to the area.

The new 1.5 million square foot facility will be located on 469 acres at the Clarksville-Montgomery County Corporate Business Park off Interstate 24.

"I want to thank Hankook Tire for its substantial investment in Tennessee and for the 1,800 jobs they'll create in Montgomery County," Governor Bill Haslam said in statement.  "The auto sector is a key industry cluster where Tennessee has a distinct advantage with more than 900 auto suppliers and manufacturers, and [Monday's] announcement reinforces our goal of becoming the No. 1 location in the Southeast for high quality jobs."

Hankook will break ground next year with production of high-end performance tires slated to begin in 2016.

Founded in 1941, Hankook is one of the fastest-growing tire companies in the world.  The company has more than 20,000 employees worldwide, and five R&D facilities.

Hankook has a 5% share of the U.S. tire market.
