KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The Loudon County Commission has opposed additional funding for repairs and maintenance of military equipment acquired from the federal government, even though the director of the county's Office of Homeland Security says it's needed.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reports the commission voted 5-4 last week to deny the $23,000.

Director Daryl Smith told commissioners that all the equipment, including Humvees, trucks and a 32-foot boat, were acquired after examination of the county's possible worst case emergency needs.

For instance, he said the boat could serve as a work platform for the local dive squad and other agencies.

The vote followed more than an hour of public comment by residents opposed to the additional funding.
