India Battered by Possible Cat 4-5 Cyclone

Posted:

Cyclone Phailin has made landfall in India as possibly a Category 4-5 storm.

They don't have reconnaissance aircraft like we do, so satellite estimates of winds are used. At one point on Friday, satellite measurements showed 175 mph sustained winds (Cat 5).

As it came ashore this morning, it seemed have dropped intensity somewhat as the eye was not as discernable as it was yesterday.  However, winds could easily have been in the 150 mph range (Cat 4).
