Woman dies from injuries in Cheatham County wreck

CHEATHAM COUNTY, Tenn. -

One person has died following a serious wreck that injured two others on Highway 70 near the Davidson-Cheatham county line Friday.

Officials said 59-year-old Helen Jasvins of Pegram died from her injuries in the crash. She and her husband were taken to the hospital after 36-year-old James Beal crossed the center line and crashed into the couple.

Investigators said Beal was traveling westbound in his pickup truck along Highway 70 when, nearing a curve in the road, he crossed over the center lane into oncoming traffic, hitting the Jasvins' truck.

Beal was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in critical condition.

Helen and Leon Jasvins were taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Vanderbilt in critical condition. Helen later died from her injuries.

The wreck, which occurred around 5 p.m., closed the highway for over two hours and forced drivers to park on the side of the road.

Those who frequently travel the busy road say it can be dangerous at times when you factor in the sudden speed change and the bright sun.

"It's 55 [mph] coming into 40 [mph] so it's kind of dangerous. With the sun coming down some people can't see even if you have your sunglasses and visor on. I would just start slowing down," said driver Megan Walker.

Authorities say alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing. Charges are pending.
