Police say truck driver strikes light pole, tries to flee

A truck driver out of Cookeville will be charged with leaving the scene of an accident after he struck a light pole and kept driving.

According to Metro police, the unidentified driver of ATS, LLC attempted to make a U-turn with his tractor trailer at Exit 5 off Briley Parkway South shortly after 7 a.m. Friday.

During the driver's attempt to get back on the parkway, the truck splintered a light pole near the on ramp.

Evidence at the scene and calls to police indicate the truck suffered major damage, possibly locking the rig.

Skid marks stretched for about a half mile from the point of impact.  Truck parts littered the shoulder of roadway.

The truck also hit a speed limit sign before coming to a stop.

Officers at the scene believe the driver was aware of the damage to the light pole and the truck, but attempted to get away.

The driver was cited and the truck was towed.

No other drivers were involved in the incident.
