Derogatory email temporarily shuts down Vandy fraternity

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A Vanderbilt fraternity is temporarily shut down after a derogatory email sent to prospective members surfaced.

The email, sent by members of Alpha Tau Omega, was filled with obscenities, degraded women and made light of an on-campus rape involving a student and four former Vanderbilt football players in June, stating, "This will be a rape free event, I promise. Football is safe again."

News 2 visited the fraternity's house for comment Wednesday evening; however no one answered the door and all Greek systems at the university have been counseled not to speak on the incident.

The ATO National Fraternity has since released a statement which reads in part, "Alpha Tau Omega finds abhorrent the email message that was sent to some Vanderbilt students…"

Vanderbilt University also released a statement that said in part, "…It conveys a message that is reprehensible in its disrespect for women and that is not a representative of the Vanderbilt University student body or the values that we uphold as a community."

The university's Vice Chancellor, Beth Fortune, said the university is continuing to look into the activities alleged to have occurred in the email and will take appropriate action.

The student who allegedly composed the email has since been expelled from the fraternity.
