Former officer pleads guilty in prostitution case

Associated Press

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - A former Memphis police officer has pleaded guilty to driving a woman to a party at a north Mississippi hotel so she could have sex.

Sean McWhirter entered a guilty plea Monday to a federal charge of transporting a person across state lines for the purposes of prostitution.

The 31-year-old McWhirter was arrested in September 2012, and he has resigned from the Memphis Police Department. He faces up to 10 years in prison at sentencing scheduled for Jan. 7.

McWhirter's case was investigated by the federal Tarnished Badge Task Force, which targets officers engaged in alleged misconduct. Critics of the department pointed to McWhirter's case and others as examples of a lack of discipline among officers.
