MT. PLEASANT, Tenn. -

Mt. Pleasant police are investigating a shooting that left a young father seriously injured.

According to authorities, 25-year-old Jeffery Donte Yokley was walking with a female friend on Tulip Street early Sunday morning when someone shot him in the head.

Yokley was taken by private vehicle to a local hospital.  From there he was flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville where he underwent surgery.

Family members say he is listed in stable condition.

It is unclear what led to the shooting.

Neighbors told Nashville's News 2 Yokley had been staying in the area and it is likely he was shot by someone he knew.

Many reported hearing arguing followed by as many as six shots fired outside their homes.

"I don't know what happened and I don't know what caused it but this is unacceptable," said neighbor William Green.

Green has known the victim since he was a child and feels for his family, especially Yokley's young children.

"My heart goes out to them," said Green.

Many neighbors told Nashville's News 2 they are now concerned for their own safety.

"It's very frightening. I'm moving. I'm leaving here," said neighbor Leah Melton.

No arrests have been made but Nashville's News 2 has learned police have a person of interest they want to talk to.
