On Thursday night, the mall's owners presented plans to aldermen and commissioners on a major mall transformation. The presentation was followed by a vote that was unanimously approved.
"Cool Springs is a part of Franklin and it's really a gem of our city. City leaders have to be proactive so that our gem remains a gem and that included upgrades. Cool Springs is very valuable to our city, so we are always going to make sure we take care of Cool Springs," said Marcia Allen, Franklin Planning Commission.
The first stage of the three-phase project includes a 3,000 square foot addition to the Sears store located at the mall's south end, which is expected to begin in February 2014.
Officials also discussed the second phase of the project, The District. It would add 53,000 square feet of new retail space located near South Springs Drive.
The new space, which is expected to begin next summer, officials said, will celebrate the culture of Middle Tennessee with equestrian details, barn doors and wood slats.
The new retail area would have canopy covered walkways for shade, among other details.
The final phase of construction will add two new retail areas with 10,000 square feet of space near the Macy's store located on the north end of the mall.
