KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -

A Knoxville soldier gave his children a big surprise Wednesday afternoon when he showed up at school after returning from deployment.

According to WATE-TV, Army Staff Sergeant Tallie Holt was deployed to Afghanistan for 10 months and returned home Wednesday.

Tina Shoup, the children's grandmother, said the idea was awesome.

"This is awesome because, you know, kids are kids. They haven't seen him in a long time."

Holt's two youngest children, seven-year-old Makenna and five-year-old Tallen, were called to a special assembly at Bluegrass Elementary School.  The siblings had no idea what was in store.

A few minutes later, their mother's SUV rolled into the parking lot.  Sergeant Holt had secretly snuck inside.

Makenna and Tallen's reactions were priceless.  The five-year-old boy couldn't let go of his father, while Makenna was surprised something was different.

"He's taller than his own truck!" she told the news station, followed with, "I love you." to her dad.

This was Holt's third deployment.  His first two trips overseas were in Iraq.

When asked what he missed the most, he said, "Just this, you miss," while holding his son and hugging his daughter.

Holt's wife told WATE it's hard when her husband is gone.

"Just the stress, and basically being a single parent. Just doing everything alone," Megan explained.

Holt isn't expected to be deployed again for three years.

He also has an older child who attends West High School.  He surprised her as well on Wednesday.
