NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
After an inmate testified as a state's witness in a juvenile transfer hearing, three other inmates allegedly threatened and tried to kill him.
According to police reports, the incident occurred just after 7 p.m. on September 18.
As the victim was entering his cell after the hearing, pending his release on electronic monitoring, Dee Waine Bumpus, 19, and Ronald Reedy, 39, aided Dashawn Slone, 21, and Tommie Bowie, 23, in assaulting him.
Police stated prison surveillance showed Bumpus locking Slone inside his cell with Slone and Bowie as Reedy stood outside as a lookout.
While inside the cell, Slone and Bowie reportedly stated, "This is what happens to snitches," and proceeded to assault him.
As one inmate allegedly strangled the man with his hands, the other beat him. The assailants then switched roles and continued to attack the victim until he reportedly began losing consciousness.
Authorities said the victim was screaming for guards, and eventually bit the finger of the inmate who was choking him.
The other inmate then pulled out a shank and threatened to stab him.
As the victim continued to yell, the inmates fled the cell, according to an affidavit.
He was hospitalized with several lacerations, contusions, a broken nose and other internal injuries.
Bumpus, Reedy, Slone and Bowie were all charged with conspiracy to commit to criminal homicide, attempted criminal homicide and retaliation for a past act.
Police added that upon apprehension, Slone's finger was bleeding, consistent with the victim's report of biting one of his attackers.
