A Franklin police officer is lucky he wasn't hurt after a vehicle slammed into his patrol car while it was parked on the shoulder of Interstate 65 near Moores Lane early Tuesday morning.
According to police, the officer was conducting a traffic stop on the side of the road when the driver of a truck pulling a trailer failed to follow the state's Move Over law and hit the officer's car.
Officer Joe LeCates was not inside his vehicle at the time of the crash.
"Initially it was shock," he told News 2. "We heard it and we could see debris fly. Particularly there was a fender a good 20 to 30 feet in the air as we watched it go over."
"It's very sobering to realize that if I had actually been in the car at the time of the crash. We may or may not be here having this conversation right now. Someone else could be speaking for me," LeCates said.
Police say the crash should be a reminder to people to follow the Move Over law.
LeCates patrol car is at a local body shop for repairs.
