TDOT says work on Charlotte Avenue Bridge will begin soon

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Work is expected to begin soon on the Charlotte Avenue Bridge near downtown officials from the Tennessee Department of Transportation announced Monday.

The upcoming bridge repair project is estimated to cost just under $400,000 and will require one weekend closure of Interstate 40 westbound at the Charlotte Avenue Bridge.

Crews will replace a 200 foot long section of the concrete bridge deck in either October or November.

In recent weeks, crews had to make temporary repairs to the 46-year-old bridge after concrete fell on three separate occasions.

"Those are just old bridges in that area and so they need a lot of maintenance," TDOT spokesperson Deanna Lambert said.

Motorists News 2 spoke with Monday said they are concerned about their safety when traveling on the bridge.

"Public safety is always the number one key," driver Allan Bell said. "I that it costs money and I know that there's all kinds of things that go into it, but you definitely want to make sure that everyone who travels on Tennessee roads are safe."

An estimated $40 million project to rehabilitate the Charlotte Avenue Bridge and three others is tentatively planned for 2015.
