Shots fired after argument breaks out during basketball game

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Three people were injured in a shooting that occurred in Hermitage Wednesday night.

The shooting was reported around 7:30 p.m. in the 4400 block of Gina Brooke Drive while a group of people were playing basketball.

Police told News 2 an argument broke out when one of the players, identified as Lawrence Hampton, pulled out a gun and fired shots.

A 17-year-old sustained a gunshot wound to his hand. He was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in critical but stable condition.

Two other victims received minor injuries after they were struck by a ricocheting bullet. Both refused treatment.

Hampton, was taken into police custody at a nearby gas station.

The 25-year-old man is charged with attempted criminal homicide. He remains jailed in lieu of a $350,000.

In 2008, police said, Hampton received an eight year sentence for aggravated robbery.
