Christian singer Allison Speer to record comedy DVD

SMYRNA, Tenn. -

A popular Christian singer will take the stage as a comedian Thursday night in Smyrna.

While Allison Speer has been telling funny stories at her concerts for 25 years, she's been studying for her upcoming show.

"It's really easy to use foul language or crude comments and make people laugh and to surprise them but to do it without any of that I think takes an added extra element of brilliance, and I really study the clean comedians because they really have to work a little bit harder," said Speer, who even called in an expert, hiring Buddy Kalb, writer for Ray Stevens, to help.

A lot of her material focuses on funny stories from her grandmother, who Speer describes as an "American Indian with a little redneck mixed in."

Speer will record her very first comedy DVD at the River of Life Assembly of God Church on Sam Ridley Parkway in Smyrna.

Doors open at 6 p.m.  The show starts at 7 p.m.
