NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

An elderly woman was killed in a house fire in west Nashville early Sunday morning.

The fire was reported around 4 a.m. at a home in the 400 block of Basswood Avenue.

Helen McMurtry, 82, died while the front of the home became engulfed in flames.

On Sunday afternoon, the McMurtry's family picked up what was left inside the home, including keepsakes and photographs salvaged from the ashes.

The victim's grandson, Bryan Espinoza, said it was difficult to walk through the home where so many generations have gathered.

"It's devastating," Espinoza said. "It's a bad way to bring a family together when something like this has happened."

Investigators determined careless smoking to be the cause of the fire.

Funeral services for McMurtry have yet to be arranged.
