NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Free mammograms were offered to women Friday outside the 100 Oaks Walmart on Powell Avenue off Thompson Lane.

The Power of the Pink teamed up Walmart stores across the country to provide free mammograms.

The program works to bring awareness to the importance of mammograms and early detection in the fight against breast cancer.

"Early detection is really the key to fighting breast cancer," founder Sherri Cliffe told News 2, adding, "There are so many women who live in rural areas that cannot get to a hospital, they cannot get to a breast health clinic and therefore they have no idea if they have breast cancer until it's too late."

She continued, "We know for a fact that, through this program, we have reached Walmart customers and associates, just by having people come up, and do a mammogram, and they will actually come back to the store and say if you weren't there, I would have never [had a mammogram] and you saved my life."

Mammograms were done in Saint Thomas Hospital's Our Mission in Motion mobile health unit.

Women who received a mammography received a $5 Walmart gift card and a pink light bulb in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
