LORMAN, Miss. -

A former Vanderbilt University football player charged in an on-campus rape has now been kicked off Alcorn State's team.

In a release Thursday night, the Lorman, Mississippi school said receiver Jaborian "Tip" McKenzie has been removed from the team until further notice.

"Alcorn failed to sufficiently examine the allegations against McKenzie before allowing him to participate in our football program," said President Christopher Brown. "In an effort to provide educational opportunities to a Southwest Mississippi student, Alcorn State University made an error in judgment."

It remains unclear when McKenzie transferred to the university or when he began practicing with the team.

He played in Saturday's game against Mississippi State and he remained listed on the team's online roster late Thursday night.

McKenzie's former Vanderbilt teammates, Brandon Banks, Cory Batey and Brandon Vandenburg, are also charged in the crime.

All are free on bond and scheduled to appear in a Davidson County courtroom on October 16.
