COLUMBIA, Tenn. -

A rezoning request for a controversial landfill proposal in Maury County has been put on hold.

A crowd of nearly 300 concerned citizens crowded into the Maury County Courthouse Wednesday night to protest the landfill, which would be the biggest in Tennessee.

Two companies from Denver, Colorado want to build an 845-acre dump on 5,200 acres they own near the Duck River on Monsanto Road, just northwest of Columbia.

Opponents say it would pollute the river and drive down property values.  Opponents even created a Web site to voice their concerns.

The attorney representing the two companies made a motion to withdraw the proposal before a vote to deny it was carried out by the board.
