Rumors surface of Coach James Franklin's knowledge of on-campus rape
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
As rumors swirl regarding his knowledge of an on-campus rape in late June, Coach James Franklin responds to reports alleging he saw a video of the incident that led to the dismissal of four players.
Reports also alleged Franklin "encouraged a player to delete the video."
"It's a very, very serious issue and I'm not going to waste your time or mine acting to baseless statements," he said, adding "We have cooperated fully with the university. We have cooperated fully with authorities and that's really as far as I am going to go with it."
Franklin said he has been cooperating with authorities throughout the investigation.
Brandon Vandenburg and former football players Brandon Banks, Cory Batey and Jaborian "Tip" McKenzie are charged with raping a 21-year-old unconscious female inside Vandenburg's dorm room at the Gillette House during the early morning hours of June 23.
They were all dismissed from the school's team June 29.
In mid-August, police charged a fifth Vanderbilt player, wide receiver Chris Boyd, with taking part in an attempted cover up of the sexual assault incident.
Two California men who are friends with Vandenburg are also charged in connection to the crime.
