Two men are now in custody after a woman was shot outside her Murfreesboro home Sunday afternoon.
The victim, 22-year-old Rachel Orman, was shot just before 2 p.m. as she returned to the Pine View Estates mobile home park on Mt. Tabor Road, just off U.S. Highway 41. Authorities said two men, Bradley Benefield, 25, and James Russell, 35, had just burglarized the woman's home and were waiting for her and her husband to return.
Orman was shot with a shotgun as she attempted to run away.
Her husband was nearby but was not shot, according to Sheriff Robert Arnold.
Neighbor Larry Garland told News 2, "So I was unloading my truck when all of it happened. One guy had a shotgun; the other had an axe."
Neighbor Barbara Lucei added, "I look over and I saw his wife over there laying in the yard, bleeding, and see this guy in all black, with his face covered, loading their car, with a shotgun."
Once the suspects left, witnesses rushed over to aid the woman and called authorities.
Orman was treated and released from Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital Sunday night.
Benefield and Russell reportedly took off separately. Benefield fled on foot, while Russell drove away in a white Jeep Liberty.
A massive manhunt ensued for the next six hours. Search efforts were led by Rutherford County authorities and a canine unit with help from the Tennessee Highway Patrol's helicopter.
Benefield was found hiding in a neighbor's garage around 7:30 p.m. and taken into custody without incident.
Russell was located on Compton Road around 7:30 a.m. Monday and taken into custody without incident.
Originally, a third person named Brian Underwood was thought to be a suspect in the crime, but police determined he did not have any involvement.
Benefield and Russell are each charged with aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary. Russell is additionally charged with attempted homicide.
Detectives said more charges are pending.
The motive for the shooting is undetermined although authorities said Orman and the suspects were acquaintances.
The men are scheduled to appear in court October 16.
