Police bust illegal gambling operation after 4 month investigation

Metro police busted an illegal gambling ring at a local business Friday after a four-month long investigation.

According to police, Edna Davenport operated the gambling operation out of the Atomic Market located at 1207 Buchanan Street.

Davenport was taken into custody Friday at a home located in the 2400 block of Osage Street, which police say was being used as a "count house" for illegal gambling proceeds.

At the time of her arrest, Davenport, 60, had more than $22,000 in cash and numbers tickets in her possession.

Twenty-eight-year-old Justin Durrell was also arrested in connection to the illegal operation.

According to police, Durrell closely followed Davenport as she made her rounds and is alleged to have acted as her security.

He is jailed on a $5,000 bond.

A third person, 68-year-old Gwendolyn Brandon, was issued a misdemeanor citation for allegedly picked up numbers wagers on behalf of the operation at various locations.

Police also seized $114,000 in cash from Davenport's Mossdale Drive home, as well as a BMW and a Mini Cooper.

Davenport was previously convicted of gambling promotion in 2008 and 2011.

She remains jailed on a $12,500 bond.
