An 83-year-old woman from West Virginia was killed by a hit-and-run driver early Thursday morning in Benton County, about 75 miles west of Nashville.
According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the woman was traveling with her daughter when their Pontiac was struck from behind.
The accident occurred around 1:10 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-40 at mile marker 128.
The impact of the collision caused the Pontiac to overturn.
Alice Williamson, a passenger in the car from Huntington, West Virginia, died. Her daughter and driver of the car, Carol Ann Williamson, 56, was injured and taken to a Jackson hospital.
The driver of the car that struck the Williamsons did not stop following the collision.
The THP is asking anyone traveling in the area early Thursday morning with information regarding the hit-and-run driver to call their office in Jackson at 731-423-6635.
A second crash occurred around 5 a.m. at mile marker 131, also in Benton County.
According to the THP, two 18 wheelers collided as traffic slowed for the first wreck.
Both semi drivers, a 42-year-old man and a 54-year-old man, were injured and transported to local hospitals.
An update on their conditions wasn't released.
