Driver, passenger flee crash scene after chain-reaction collision

Posted: Updated:
FRANKLIN, Tenn. -

It was a busy Tuesday morning for emergency personnel along Interstate 65 in Williamson County.

Around 1:50 a.m., a crash involving two tractor trailers and two passenger cars occurred in the southbound lanes of I-65 at State Route 840.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, a Dodge Charger struck a semi-truck and spun into the roadway where it was hit by another 18-wheeler.

The collision caused the second semi to jackknife across the interstate. A fourth vehicle, a Pontiac, then hit the second big rig.

Following the collision, the occupants of the Dodge, a man and a woman, ran from the scene.

A short time later, investigators found Kristin Ryder, 33, hiding in the woods alongside the interstate.  She was not injured.

The car's owner, Andrew Meadors, of Spring Hill, was found a few hours later after falling off a 40-foot cliff.

Meadors suffered a head injury during the fall and was taken from the scene by ambulance.

The THP said it was not immediately clear who was driving, Ryder or Meadors, but alcohol was likely a factor in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.

The driver of the Pontiac, Melvin Carter, 46, of Lewisburg was injured and taken to Williamson County Medical Center.

Neither driver of the semi trucks involved was injured.

It took nearly four hours to clear the area because a large amount of oil spilled onto the interstate.

The southbound lanes of I-65 reopened just before 6 a.m.
