Group seeks alternative horse protection measures

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

The head of the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration said the group will continue working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to create more testing of horses.

A new bill would only allow USDA inspectors to work horse shows and increase penalties for "Horse Protection Act" violations, such as soring.

Celebration leaders said they want alternative legislation to protect both horses and the sport.

The 11-day celebration in Shelbyville ended this past weekend.
